Living Your Life

There aren't any secrets

to living your life

you’re going to be happy

you’re going to have strife.

You’re going to get lonely

and you may have a wife.

There are dues to be paid

and memories to look for

there may be fame and fortune

if you knock on the right door.

There's wonder and motion

and leisure and thrills

there's fear and deception

and very dangerous pills.

Dues to be paid include

loving and heartbreak

and there's a definite chance

monthly time may come too late.

Children may come and in time

they will go

and hopefully at least once

you'll get to play in the snow.

You will get to make love

with the lover you choose

and you may get into trouble

because of the rules.

You'll think you are pretty

and ugly, and dumb

and since you’re a human

you will get to be numb.

You'll watch at least

one dirty movie for fun

and hundreds of others

about life on the run.

There will be a first kiss

holding hands

and a white lie

and someone won't like you

no matter how hard you try.

You'll have to study to learn

about life in your culture

and if you take advantage of someone

they'll look at you like a vulture.

You may drink too much booze

and eat too much good food

and you will suffer like all

when you act like a big fool.

Someone will smile

and turn your heart into Jell-O

when you look in their eyes

you will be in love

about which you'll bellow.

You'll sit in the sunshine

and soak up it's rays

and you will look out a window

at the rain on some days.

As you grow older

you will learn more of life

and one day you'll turn round

and know love is your right.

When it's all over

you'll find heaven on earth

was not just in your head

and then you will smile

and breathe your last breath

and you'll make room for more

and take your last rest.

Then life will start over

for the young with their turn

and all that you found

is not all that they'll learn.
